The geographical position of the country, a coastline of 200 km and a great variety of cultural,
historical and natural treasures such as high mountains, deep valleys, glaciers, or a largely diverse
flora and fauna, make Montenegro one of the most beautiful countries in the Mediterranean.
Such diverseness on such a small territory makes Montenegro a unique country with four different climate
types and with a number of geographical variations, giving to it, from the standpoint of tourism many
comparative advantages.
The coast of Montenegro, which lies on the South Adriatic Sea, falls into the cleanest and warmest seas of
the Mediterranean. In order to protect the exceptional nature and its values, the Parliament of Montenegro
proclaimed Montenegro an Ecological State in 1991, making the country one of its kind.
The 293 km long coast offers many exceptional attractions such as a number of sandy beaches and coves, the
specific blue-green color of the clear sea, olive plants, Mediterranean flora and fauna, the background with
high mountains and the bay of Kotor - one of the most beautiful fiords on the Mediterranean.
Tourism is key to Montenegro. Today, huge efforts are being made concerning the promotion and development
of the tourism sector. The Government marked tourism as one of the strategic industries in the country, and
according to the Master Plan for tourism development, the country aims to become one of the most attractive
destinations on the Mediterranean, somewhat like a 'new Majorca'.
Currently, the country receives over 4 million visitors per year – This is 40% of the tourist numbers
enjoyed in the late 1980’s.
